How to Handle Feeling Overwhelmed
Feeling overwhelmed is a normal part of life. We all experience times when our to-do list piles up and we feel like there’s just not enough time in the day. But it doesn’t have to be this way! In this blog post, I will be discussing how to handle feeling overwhelmed and get back to feeling calm and in control.
Take a Minute for Yourself
When you’re feeling overwhelmed, it can be hard to focus on anything else. All you can think about is how much work you have to do and how stressed you are. When you’re overwhelmed, it can feel like the world is crashing down around you, but the truth is that it doesn’t have to be that way. Taking a few minutes for yourself each day can help you reclaim your calm and get back in control.
Take Inventory of Your Feelings
When you're overwhelmed, take a few moments to acknowledge your emotions without judgment. Ask yourself what emotions are coming up for you. Are you feeling pressured? Stressed? Tired? Do you feel like ignoring everything?
It's important that you notice and acknowledge these feelings without judging yourself or anyone else. The goal is not to try and push away those feelings but rather just observe them without any attachment or judgment. They are legitimate feelings but feelings always pass.
Learn How to Neutralize Feelings of Overwhelm
The next step after noticing your feelings is to let them, and any related judgment of yourself go. It's natural to blame yourself for being overwhelmed. It's easy to shame yourself for saying yes, for overcommitting, or for packing too much into one day. It's also natural to blame other people who piled things on top of your already-packed schedule.
You can forgive yourself for overdoing or overcommitting. It's okay. You probably got overcommitted because you're capable and you like to say yes. You have a good heart and helping others is important to you. That's a wonderful quality but it often contributes to being busy. If you're kicking yourself for being too busy, forgive yourself now.
You can also forgive others for 'piling things on' to you. You've likely heard the saying, 'When you want something done, ask a busy person'. It's true. People around you have learned that you are reliable and productive and that's why they ask you. You've demonstrated that you're capable so it's only natural that you're their 'go-to' person when they need something. It's natural for them to ask or expect your help.
Reach Out for Help
Sometimes when we're feeling overwhelmed, all we need is someone else's help or perspective on the situation. Don't hesitate to reach out and ask for help from friends, family members, or even professionals if needed! This could be anything from getting advice on how to approach a certain task or project, getting help with actually completing tasks/projects, or simply talking through your thoughts and feelings with someone who can offer support and understanding.
